一部改编自中国民间故事，讲述了一位僧人及其神圣守护者进行的西方朝圣之旅，猴子是吴正恩根据中国古代传说追溯佛教起源的故事。它讲述了特里皮塔卡和门徒猪仔，桑迪，当然还有猴子的冒险经历，从中国到印度的旅程，以获取将拯救世界的大型车辆圣经。
该系列共播出两季，每季26集。第一季从1978年10月持续到1979年4月。第二季从1979年11月持续到1980年5月。两季都有在中国西北和内蒙古拍摄的镜头。
这部剧的不同寻常之处在于，它是由日本演员在中国演出的，然后配音成英语。英文版由BBC制作，于1979年11月在英国和澳大利亚播出。配音对的剧本由大卫·威尔编写。它只播出了39集，因为根据BBC的判断，精选的剧集没有为原始剧集配音。这些剩余的剧集由神话电影有限公司在2004年初由原始演员配音，在VHS和DVD上成功发行英语配音系列后。失踪的13集于2004年9月8日在英国第4频道播出。
